PhD Stipend in USA, UK, Canada and Germany: What You Actually Get After Rent
The most common regret we hear from Indian applicants is simple: “I started too late.” A strong PhD application for USA, UK or Canada takes 10 to 12 months to put together properly. Most deadlines for Fall 2027 entry fall between December 2026 and February 2027, so the real work begins in early 2026 or, at the latest, by mid-2026.
If you’re reading this in late 2026, don’t panic. Use the plan to see what you can still do well this cycle, and what might be better saved for the next one.

Every program has its own dates. Put your real deadlines in a spreadsheet and set reminders two weeks before each one.
Recommenders need notice. Ask formally at least six to eight weeks before the first deadline. Give each one a short brief: your CV, SOP draft, list of programs and deadlines, and two or three things you’d like them to mention. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD guide]
Tests need a retake window. Plan to take the GRE and English test early enough for one retake before your first deadline. Score reporting can take up to two weeks.
Professor emails have a season. In Canada and the UK, professors decide on students well before formal deadlines. Emails sent in December often arrive too late. [link: how to email a professor for PhD]
Scholarships close before admissions. UK and some US fellowships have deadlines earlier than the program’s own deadline. Oxford’s Clarendon, for example, considers you only if you apply by the relevant January deadline. Missing an internal deadline can cost you the funding even if you’re admitted.
