PhD Interview Questions: How to Prepare for PhD Interviews in UK, USA and Canada
Every year Indian students compare PhD offers by the biggest number in the letter. That number is rarely what lands in your account. Taxes, fees, health insurance, and above all rent decide how comfortable your four or five years will be.
This guide explains how stipends work in each country, gives current benchmark figures, and shows how to compare offers properly.
| Country | Benchmark figure | What it is | Taxed? |
| USA | USD 37,000 a year (NSF GRFP) | A national fellowship many universities use as a reference point; department stipends range above and below | Generally yes, federal and often state |
| UK | £21,805 a year, £23,805 in London (UKRI minimum) | Minimum for UKRI studentships from 1 October 2026 | No, tax-free |
| Canada | CAD 40,000 a year (CGRS-D) | National doctoral scholarship; most students earn less through department packages | Scholarships often exempt; employment income taxed |
| Germany | About €1,800 to €3,000 net a month (TV-L E13 positions) | Salary for part-time research posts | Yes, but quoted net |
Note: NSF GRFP itself is only open to US citizens and permanent residents. We use it as a benchmark because many departments pitch their stipends against it.
A funded US PhD offer waives tuition and pays a stipend through a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship. Figures vary widely.
US stipends are generally taxable income. Because of the India-US tax treaty, some Indian students may be able to claim treaty benefits; get proper tax advice in your first year.

The UKRI minimum is the baseline most UK universities follow for funded places, and many university scholarships match it. It’s tax-free, and your tuition is paid separately. For international students, check whether the international fee difference is covered. [link: fully funded PhD in UK]
UK stipends are lower on paper than US ones, but they’re tax-free and the PhD is shorter, three to four years.
Most Canadian universities publish a minimum funding guarantee for each doctoral program. These packages combine research assistantship pay, teaching assistant pay and fellowships. Some universities charge international PhD students domestic tuition; others give an award to cover the difference. Read the offer letter to see whether tuition is taken out of your package. The CGRS-D figure in the table is a scholarship you can apply for once enrolled; it is not the typical package.

In Germany, a funded PhD is often a job. You sign a contract on the TV-L E13 scale (or TVöD at some institutes), often at 50% to 75% for science and engineering. You pay income tax and social contributions, but you get health insurance, pension contributions and paid leave. The net figures above already account for deductions.
The alternative is a scholarship, such as a DAAD grant, which is tax-free but smaller and without pension contributions. [link: PhD in Germany vs PhD in USA]
The same stipend can mean comfort in one city and stress in another. Before accepting, look up shared-flat rent on local student housing groups and university housing pages. As a rough rule:
Work out a simple monthly budget for each offer.
What’s left is your real number. We’ve seen students choose an offer that was USD 6,000 lower on paper and end up with more money each month.

Is a PhD stipend enough to live on?
In most places, yes for a single student sharing a flat. It becomes tight with a family or in the most expensive cities.
Do PhD students pay tax in the UK?
UKRI and most university stipends are tax-free.
Can I send money home from my PhD stipend?
Some students do after the first year, but don’t plan your finances around it.
Which country pays PhD students the most?
On paper, top US programs and Switzerland often pay the most. After tax and rent, the gap narrows a lot.
