Digital Humanities brings computing to humanities questions. It uses text mining, mapping, network analysis, digital archives and machine learning to study literature, history, art and culture, and it asks critical questions about technology itself. For Indian students, this is a field with huge open problems. Most Indian-language texts, manuscripts and archives are still poorly digitised. Optical character recognition for Indian scripts, multilingual text analysis and digital preservation of manuscripts all need researchers who understand both the languages and the technology. A PhD in Digital Humanities abroad suits graduates from humanities fields who code, and computer science graduates who care about culture.
Universities abroad have dedicated DH departments and labs with infrastructure, engineers and data.
Learn programming, data science and digital methods alongside critical theory.
Many PhDs are attached to large digital archive or text analysis projects.
Skills transfer to academia, libraries, archives, data science and the cultural technology sector.

UK and Ireland. The UK has some of the oldest standalone Digital Humanities departments, offering research PhDs in three to four years. Ireland also has strong DH programs.
Europe. Germany and the Netherlands have growing DH programs, many with salaried PhD positions on funded projects. Germany is strong in digital editions and text encoding.
USA. Few standalone DH PhDs exist. Most students do a PhD in English, history or information science with a DH specialisation or certificate, in a university with a strong DH lab. Full funding is standard.
Country | Universities to research | Program type |
UK | King’s College London (Department of Digital Humanities), UCL, University of Glasgow, University of Sussex | Standalone DH PhDs and DH within humanities departments |
Ireland | Trinity College Dublin, Maynooth University | DH PhDs |
Germany | University of Cologne, University of Göttingen, University of Trier, Leipzig | Digital editions, text analysis, project positions |
Netherlands | University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, Leiden | Computational humanities, project positions |
USA | Stanford, Northeastern, George Mason, UCLA, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michigan State | Disciplinary PhDs with DH focus |
Europe. Salaried project positions in Germany and the Netherlands, advertised like jobs.
USA. Full funding for admitted students in the disciplinary PhD, often with DH lab assistantships.
Ireland. National scholarships and university-funded positions.
