Classics, the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literature, history, philosophy and material culture, is one of the oldest university disciplines in the world. Few Indian students apply, and that's exactly why those who do stand out. India has deep historical connections to the classical world: Alexander's campaigns, the Indo-Greek kingdoms, Roman trade with South Indian ports, and shared Indo-European linguistic roots between Sanskrit, Greek and Latin. Scholars who can work across these traditions bring something most Classics departments lack. This page explains what a PhD in Classics abroad requires, especially the language preparation, and how Indian students can build a realistic path into the field.
Classics departments train you to read Greek and Latin texts closely and critically.
Work across literature, history, philosophy, archaeology, art and reception.
The field increasingly studies connections between the Mediterranean and Asia, and how classical texts have been read worldwide, including in India.
Precision with language and evidence leads to careers in academia, publishing, law, policy and education.

Classics PhDs usually expect advanced reading in both Greek and Latin on arrival, often after several years of study of each. Most also require reading knowledge of German and French or Italian for scholarship.
Few Indian universities teach Greek and Latin to an advanced level. Realistic routes include:
