Departments abroad have film archives, preservation labs and regular screening programs, and fund research trips to archives such as the National Film Archive of India.

Theory and method

You'll train in film theory, media history, industry studies and digital methods.

Global cinema focus

Many departments now treat Indian, Chinese, Nigerian and Latin American cinemas as central, not peripheral.

Varied careers

Graduates work in academia, programming and curation, streaming and media research, and cultural policy.

USA, UK or elsewhere?

PhD in Film and Media Studies USA. Five to seven years, with coursework, exams and a dissertation. Full funding is standard for admitted students. Many US departments combine film with media studies, visual culture or communication. Some offer joint PhDs with English, history or East Asian studies.

PhD in Film Studies UK. Three to four years, research-led. The UK is strong in global cinema, film history and television studies. You’ll need a research proposal and supervisor support.

Other countries. The Netherlands (especially Amsterdam and Utrecht) is strong in media studies and new media. Canada, Australia and Singapore also have good programs.

Funding a Film or Media Studies PhD

USA. Most programs offer admitted students a tuition waiver, health insurance and a five-year stipend, usually with teaching assistantships. Many add funding for archival research abroad.

  1. International funding comes through university research scholarships, Gates Cambridge, AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards (up to 30% international), and the Felix Scholarship for Indian students at Oxford, Reading and SOAS.

Europe. Dutch PhD positions are salaried for four years.

What you need to apply

  1. Master’s in film, media, communication, English or a related field. Some US programs admit BA graduates.
  2. Writing sample. A paper with close analysis of films or media texts tied to a clear argument. [link: writing sample for PhD]
  3. Statement of purpose. Name your research questions, the media you’ll study, your methods, and faculty fit. [link: personal statement vs SOP]
  4. Research proposal for UK programs. [link: PhD research proposal format]
  5. Three letters, ideally from academics who know your research writing. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD]
  6. CV, listing festivals, programming, criticism or production experience.
  7. English test, unless waived. GRE usually not needed.

What makes a film studies application stand out

  • Formal analysis. Committees want to see you analyse shots, sound, editing and narrative, not just themes.
  • Historical and industrial context. Show you understand how films were made, distributed and watched.
  • A clear corpus. “Tamil cinema” is broad. “Comedy tracks in Tamil cinema of the 1990s and their circulation on YouTube” is a project.
  • Language access. Your ability to watch and read sources in Indian languages is a major strength.
  • Archival awareness. Mention film archives, magazines, censorship files or trade papers you’ll use.

Research topics that suit Indian applicants

  • Film song and playback singing as a media system
  • Single-screen theatres and their decline
  • Regional cinemas on streaming platforms
  • Censorship and certification in post-independence India
  • Fan cultures and stardom in South Indian cinema
  • Doordarshan and the making of national television
  • Short-video apps and new forms of everyday media
