Delhi, India
Anthropology has studied India for more than a century, often through the eyes of outsiders. Today, departments abroad actively want anthropologists who can work in Indian languages, understand caste, religion and kinship from experience, and build long-term relationships in the field. A PhD in Anthropology abroad trains you to do ethnography: long-term fieldwork, participant observation, interviews and careful writing about how people live. It suits graduates in sociology, anthropology, history, development studies, social work and related fields. This page focuses on cultural anthropology (USA) and social anthropology (UK and Europe). Biological anthropology and archaeology have separate pages or programs.
Programs abroad fund 12 to 24 months of fieldwork, including in India.
You'll engage with debates on power, the state, religion, economy, environment and personhood.
Training covers ethnographic method, research ethics, and sometimes mixed or digital methods.
Anthropologists work in academia, development, public health, technology, design research and policy.
