Where to Study

PhD in Gender Studies USA. Five to six years with coursework, exams and a dissertation. Some universities offer standalone PhDs in Gender Studies, Women’s Studies or Feminist Studies. Others offer joint PhDs (for example, English and Women’s Studies) or graduate certificates alongside a disciplinary PhD. Full funding is standard for admitted students.

PhD in Gender Studies UK. Three to four years, research-led. Several universities have dedicated gender studies centres. You’ll need a research proposal and supervisor.

Europe. The Netherlands (Utrecht) and Central European University (now in Vienna) have well-known gender studies programs. Some positions are funded through research projects.

Funding a Gender Studies PhD

USA. Admitted students usually receive full tuition, health insurance and a stipend for five years, often through teaching in introductory gender studies courses.

  1. Gender studies often falls under ESRC (social science) or AHRC (humanities) funding, depending on the project. International places are limited. Look at LSE and SOAS scholarships, university-wide awards, Gates Cambridge, Clarendon and Felix.

Europe. CEU and Dutch universities offer some funded places.

How to make your application stand out

  • Combine theory and evidence. Committees want feminist theory tied to real texts, archives or fieldwork.
  • Be intersectional in practice. Show how caste, class, religion, sexuality and region shape your question.
  • Bring activism carefully. Experience counts, but frame it as research insight, not advocacy.
  • Choose a method. Say whether you’ll use ethnography, archives, discourse analysis or mixed methods.
  • Fit with faculty. Name scholars whose work you’ll build on.
