PhD in History Abroad

Indian history graduates have a real advantage when applying for a PhD in History abroad. You can read sources in Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Tamil or Marathi. You know the National Archives of India and state archives. You understand debates in South Asian historiography from the inside. Few applicants from elsewhere can offer that.

That advantage only counts if your application shows it. History committees in the USA and UK want a clear question, evidence that sources exist to answer it, and a writing sample that proves you can build an argument from archives. This guide explains how to get there.

Why do a PhD in History abroad?

Archives on both sides

Much of the paper trail of colonial India sits in London, at the British Library's India Office Records and the National Archives at Kew. US universities fund long research trips to India and the UK.

Training in method

US programs in particular spend two years building historiographical and methodological depth before you write.

A wider academic market

A PhD from a strong department prepares you for jobs in the USA, UK, Europe, Asia and India.

Comparative perspective

Working in a global department pushes you to connect South Asian history to world, imperial and transnational history.

USA or UK for a PhD in History?

PhD in History USA. Programs usually take six to seven years. You complete coursework, sit comprehensive exams in a major and minor field, write a prospectus, then do archival research and write. Most programs fully fund admitted students for five or six years, and many offer extra grants for fieldwork in India. You apply to the department, though you should name the faculty you want to work with.

PhD in History UK. UK PhDs take three to four years. You arrive with a defined project and start research straight away. You’ll need a research proposal and a supervisor who supports your application. Funding is limited for international students, but archives are close by and the timeline is shorter.

Other countries. Canada offers funded History PhDs with US-style structure. Germany and the Netherlands host strong global and imperial history groups, often through funded projects. Leiden is known for Asian and colonial history.

Funded US-style programs

The right department depends on who works on your region and period. Two active South Asia historians in a department matter more than its ranking.

Funding a History PhD abroad

USA. Admitted students typically receive a tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend for five or more years. Much of that comes through teaching assistantships after the first year. Additional grants support archival research in India; external awards such as those from the American Institute of Indian Studies also support dissertation research.

  1. International students rely on:
  • University-wide scholarships such as Gates Cambridge and the Clarendon Fund at Oxford.
  • AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards, now made directly to about 50 universities, with up to 30% of places open to international students.
  • The Felix Scholarship at Oxford, Reading and SOAS for Indian students with limited means.
  • The Rhodes Scholarship for a DPhil at Oxford.

Already doing a PhD in India? Short research stays are possible through the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship (USA) and Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships (UK).

What you need to apply

  1. Master’s degree in History or a related field. Strong BA graduates can apply to US programs, but most Indian applicants apply after an MA or MPhil.
  2. Statement of purpose that names your research question, your sources, and the faculty you’d work with. [link: personal statement vs SOP]
  3. Writing sample, ideally a chapter or paper based on primary sources. [link: writing sample for PhD]
  4. Research proposal for the UK (1,500 to 3,000 words), with a clear account of archives and methods. [link: PhD research proposal format]
  5. Three recommendation letters, at least one from your MA dissertation supervisor. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD]
  6. Language evidence. List every language you read and at what level. Committees take this seriously.
  7. English test, unless waived. [link: IELTS vs TOEFL for PhD]

The GRE is now uncommon for History PhDs. Check each program.

How to make your History application stronger

  • Name your sources. Say which archive, collection or set of documents you’ll use. “Records of the Bombay Revenue Department, 1860 to 1900” tells a committee you know where to look.
  • Show you can read them. Mention your languages and any palaeography, Persian, Sanskrit or Urdu training.
  • Join a historiographical debate. Show which historians you’re responding to and how your work changes the picture.
  • Pick a writing sample built on primary material. A sample that only discusses secondary literature is weaker.
  • Fit the faculty. Explain how your project connects to specific historians and to the department’s strengths.

Research topics that suit Indian applicants

  • Famine, relief and the colonial state in the Deccan
  • Princely states and their relationships with British India
  • Caste associations and print in early 20th-century South India
  • Indian Ocean trade networks and port cities
  • Partition refugees and resettlement in Delhi, Punjab or Bengal
  • Colonial forestry and adivasi communities
  • Women, law and property in colonial courts

These are illustrations. Your topic should come from your own MA research and reading.
