Delhi, India
Most Indian students grow up reading in at least two or three languages. In Comparative Literature, that's not a background detail; it's the core qualification. Comparative Literature PhD programs abroad study literature across languages, cultures and traditions, and they require applicants who can read seriously in more than one language. If you studied Comparative Literature at Jadavpur, Delhi or Hyderabad, or English with a strong second literature, this field may suit you better than an English PhD. This guide explains how Comparative Literature PhDs work, the language expectations, and how to stand out.
You can work on Bengali and French modernism, or Urdu and Persian poetry, or Tamil and English novels, in one project.
Comparative Literature departments are often centres of literary theory, translation studies and world literature debates.
The field has moved beyond comparing European texts, and Indian literatures are increasingly central.
Many departments treat translation as a serious research practice

Be honest in your application about your level. Committees check.

Check which faculty can supervise your languages. A department strong in French and German but with no South Asian expertise may not suit an Urdu-French project.
USA. Admitted students usually receive full tuition, health insurance and a five-year stipend, with teaching. Summer language funding is common.
Europe. Salaried project positions in the Netherlands and Germany.
