GRE for PhD Admission: Do USA, Canada and Ivy League Programs Still Ask for It?
Indian students often compare Germany and the USA as if they were two brands of the same product. They aren’t. A US PhD is a long graduate program with coursework, exams and then research. A German PhD is usually a research job from day one, attached to a professor or a project.
Neither is better in general. One will suit you better, depending on how clear your research question is, how much time you want to spend, and where you want to work afterwards.

Germany. Most funded PhD positions are jobs, not scholarships. You sign a contract on the public-sector pay scale, usually TV-L E13, often at 50% to 75% of a full post in science. Net pay commonly lands around €1,800 to €3,000 a month, and you get health insurance, pension contributions and paid leave. source
The other route is a scholarship. DAAD research grants for doctoral candidates are listed at €1,400 a month plus a research allowance and insurance support. source Political foundations like Konrad Adenauer, Heinrich Böll and Friedrich Ebert also fund doctoral candidates. Scholarships are tax-free but don’t include pension contributions.
USA. Funded PhD offers waive tuition and pay a stipend for 9 or 12 months. Stipends vary a lot by field and city. Many engineering and science programs pay in the range of USD 30,000 to 50,000 a year, and some top programs pay more. Health insurance is usually included.

In raw numbers, a US stipend often looks bigger. In practice, rent in Boston, New York or the Bay Area eats much of it, while a German salary in Aachen, Dresden or Freiburg stretches further. Compare what you keep, not what you are paid.
This is the biggest practical difference. If you already have a master’s and a clear research question, Germany can get you to a doctorate two years faster. That’s two extra years of salary or postdoc experience.
The US adds coursework and qualifying exams. Many students find that valuable: you build breadth, change direction if you need to, and choose an advisor after lab rotations. If you’re unsure of your exact topic, the US structure is kinder.
Germany has two main routes.
Search portals like DAAD’s PhDGermany, academics.de and university job pages. Many positions are posted as jobs with a closing date.
USA admits through a departmental committee with a December or January deadline. You send an SOP, three recommendation letters, transcripts, a CV and, where needed, GRE and English test scores. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD guide]
Germany has strong links between universities and industry, especially in engineering, chemistry and automotive research. Graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work after finishing, and the EU Blue Card route is popular with Indian PhDs. Learning German, even to B1, widens job options a lot outside academia.
USA has the largest academic job market and a huge tech and biotech industry. STEM PhDs can use OPT and the STEM extension after graduation. The H-1B lottery remains the main uncertainty for long-term work, so check current rules when you plan.
