Delhi, India
India makes more films than any other country, in more than 20 languages. It also has one of the world's largest streaming and social media audiences. For film and media scholars, that makes India a major research site, and departments abroad actively seek scholars who know it from the inside. A PhD in Film Studies or Media Studies abroad suits graduates in film, media, English, communication, sociology or art history who want to research cinema, television, digital media or media industries. This guide covers what these programs study, where to apply, and how to build a winning application.
Departments abroad have film archives, preservation labs and regular screening programs, and fund research trips to archives such as the National Film Archive of India.
You'll train in film theory, media history, industry studies and digital methods.
Many departments now treat Indian, Chinese, Nigerian and Latin American cinemas as central, not peripheral.
Graduates work in academia, programming and curation, streaming and media research, and cultural policy.
