Funding an Anthropology PhD

USA. Admitted students usually receive full tuition, health insurance and five or more years of stipend support. Fieldwork is often funded by external grants; the Wenner-Gren Foundation offers dissertation fieldwork grants, and universities have their own international research funds.

  1. Anthropology is usually funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through doctoral training partnerships, with limited places for international students. Other routes include LSE, SOAS, Oxford and Cambridge scholarships, Gates Cambridge, Clarendon and Felix.

Europe. Salaried positions in the Netherlands and project positions in Germany.

What you need to apply

  1. Master’s in anthropology or sociology (or related field). US programs also admit BA graduates with strong research.
  2. Writing sample, ideally based on fieldwork or interviews, with a clear argument. [link: writing sample for PhD]
  3. Statement of purpose with a research question, field site, ethics awareness and theoretical frame. [link: personal statement vs SOP]
  4. Research proposal for UK and European programs, including methods and fieldwork plan. [link: PhD research proposal format]
  5. Three letters, ideally from research supervisors. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD]
  6. Language evidence for your field site.
  7. English test, unless waived. The GRE is now optional or not accepted at most programs.

How to make your application stand out

  • Show fieldwork experience. MA fieldwork, NGO work or research assistantships show you can work in the field.
  • Ask a theoretical question. Your project should speak to debates beyond India.
  • Think about ethics and positionality. Explain your relationship to the community and how you’ll handle consent, risk and power.
  • Know your site. Show access, language and feasibility.
  • Avoid policy reports. Committees want ethnographic insight, not just recommendations.

Research topics that suit Indian applicants
