Expertise, Authority & Trust

Why choose Comparative Literature over English?

Multilingual research

You can work on Bengali and French modernism, or Urdu and Persian poetry, or Tamil and English novels, in one project.

Theory-rich training

Comparative Literature departments are often centres of literary theory, translation studies and world literature debates.

Space for non-European literatures

The field has moved beyond comparing European texts, and Indian literatures are increasingly central.

Translation as scholarship

Many departments treat translation as a serious research practice

Language requirements

Language is what makes Comparative Literature different from English.

  • USA: Programs usually expect research-level reading in at least two languages besides English, or English plus two others, by the time you take your exams. Many require reading knowledge of a third language before the dissertation.
  • UK: Expect at least one strong literary language besides English, demonstrated in your proposal and writing sample.
  • Indian languages count. Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam and others are valid research languages. Many applicants combine an Indian language with French, German, Spanish or Persian.

Be honest in your application about your level. Committees check.

Where to Study

PhD in Comparative Literature USA. Five to six years, with coursework, language exams, comprehensive exams and a dissertation. Full funding is standard for admitted students. Some departments are separate; others are housed with Literature, Romance Studies or a Center for Comparative Literature and Society.

PhD in Comparative Literature UK. Three to four years. Comparative work often sits inside Modern Languages, English or Translation departments. You’ll need a proposal and supervisor.

Europe. Many universities in the Netherlands and Germany have comparative literature programs, often project-based with salaried positions.

Check which faculty can supervise your languages. A department strong in French and German but with no South Asian expertise may not suit an Urdu-French project.

  1. International funding includes university research scholarships, Gates Cambridge, the Clarendon Fund, the Felix Scholarship, and AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards with up to 30% international places.

How to make your application stand out

  • Compare with a reason. Explain why these texts belong together: shared history, translation, influence, theme or form.
  • Work from originals. Quote and analyse in the original language, with your own translations.
  • Engage current debates. Show awareness of world literature, translation theory and postcolonial critique.
  • Avoid surveys. Two or three texts read closely beat ten texts summarised.
