What you need to apply

  1. A master’s in Sanskrit, an Indian language and literature, history, religion, philosophy or a related field.
  2. Proof of language ability. List each language, how long you studied it, and what you can read. Committees may test you later.
  3. Writing sample showing close reading of primary texts, ideally with your own translations. [link: writing sample for PhD]
  4. Statement of purpose naming your texts, period, languages and questions. [link: personal statement vs SOP]
  5. Research proposal for UK and German programs. [link: PhD research proposal format]
  6. Three letters, including at least one from a teacher of your primary research language. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD]
  7. English test, unless waived.

How to make your application stand out

  • Translate in your writing sample. Your own careful translations show philological skill directly.
  • Bridge traditional and academic learning. If you trained in a pathashala, madrasa or traditional setting, explain how that training supports critical academic work.
  • Use theory with care. Combine close reading with questions that matter to the wider humanities.
  • Know the field. Show you’ve read recent scholarship from abroad and from India.
  • Show breadth in languages. A second research language, such as Persian with Urdu or Prakrit with Sanskrit, is a strong advantage.

Research topics that suit Indian applicants

  • Commentary traditions in Sanskrit poetics
  • Early modern Braj Bhasha poetry at Rajput courts
  • Persian chronicles and the making of Mughal history
  • Tamil Śaiva devotional literature and temple culture
