Expertise, Authority & Trust

Why do a PhD in English Literature abroad?

Indian MA programs in English are rigorous, and many of our scholars come from them. A PhD abroad adds three things.

Access to archives and libraries

Major collections of colonial-era print, missionary records, early Indian periodicals and literary manuscripts sit in the British Library, the Bodleian, and US research libraries.

A global academic network

You'll present at conferences such as the MLA and the ACLA, publish in international journals, and build relationships with scholars across the field.

Career mobility

A PhD from a well-regarded department opens academic jobs in the USA, UK, Europe, Asia and India, and roles in publishing, cultural policy and editing.

Value Driven Academic

Your Indian training is also an asset. Committees value applicants who read Indian-language literatures, know South Asian literary history, and can work across English and another language.

Sub-fields you can specialise in

A PhD in English is a single degree, but you’ll specialise in one or two fields. These are the most common, with notes on fit for Indian applicants.

USA or UK: which is better for you?

PhD in English in USA. US programs usually run five to six years. The first two years include coursework, then qualifying exams, then the dissertation. Most programs give admitted students full tuition and a stipend for five years, in return for teaching. You apply to the department, not to a supervisor, and choose your advisor later. A US PhD suits you if you want breadth, teaching experience and time to develop your project.

PhD in English Literature UK. UK PhDs are three to four years with no coursework. You need a clear research proposal and a supervisor who agrees to work with you before you apply. Funding is the challenge: international students compete for a small number of university scholarships and AHRC-funded places. A UK PhD suits you if your project is already well defined and you want to finish faster.

Other options. Canada follows a US-style model with shorter timelines. Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland offer some funded English PhD positions, often attached to projects. Singapore and Hong Kong fund English PhDs with good stipends.

Eligibility and application documents

Most programs ask for:

  1. A master’s degree in English or a related field. US programs also accept strong bachelor’s graduates, but most Indian applicants apply after an MA.
  2. Statement of purpose (around 1,000 words): your research questions, why they matter, and why this department. [link: personal statement vs SOP]
  3. Writing sample (US: usually 15 to 25 pages; UK: often 3,000 to 5,000 words). This is the most important document in your file. [link: writing sample for PhD]
  4. Research proposal for UK applications, usually 1,500 to 3,000 words. [link: PhD research proposal format]
  5. Three letters of recommendation, ideally from professors who supervised your MA dissertation or seminar papers. [link: Letter of Recommendation for PhD]
  6. Transcripts and CV. [link: academic CV for PhD]
  7. English test (IELTS or TOEFL), unless waived for an English-medium degree. [link: IELTS vs TOEFL for PhD]

The GRE is rarely required for English PhDs now, and many departments won’t consider it at all.

What makes an English PhD application stand out

  • A writing sample with an argument. Not a summary of criticism, but your own claim, supported by close reading. A revised MA dissertation chapter is often the best choice.
  • A specific research question. “Postcolonial literature” is a field. “How Hindi pulp fiction of the 1960s reworked the British detective novel” is a project.
  • Real fit. Name two or three faculty and explain how your work connects to theirs.
  • Language skills. Reading knowledge of Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi or another Indian language gives your project depth few other applicants can offer.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity. Conference papers, published essays, or work as a research assistant.

Research topics that work well for Indian applicants

  • Partition memory in Urdu, Hindi and English fiction
  • Colonial print culture and early Indian periodicals in English
  • Dalit autobiography and testimony in translation
  • The Indian novel in English and global literary markets
  • Women’s writing in colonial Bengal or Kerala
  • Environmental crisis in contemporary South Asian fiction
  • Translation politics between Indian languages and English

Use these as starting points only. Your topic should come from your own reading and MA research.

Careers after a PhD in English Literature

  • Academia: assistant professor roles in the USA, UK, Asia and India, including central universities and private liberal arts universities like Ashoka and Krea.
  • Publishing and editing: acquisitions, editorial and literary agency work.
  • Cultural organisations: literary festivals, museums, foundations and arts councils.
  • Writing and journalism: criticism, long-form journalism and literary translation.
  • Policy and education: curriculum design, education research and nonprofit leadership.

The academic job market is competitive everywhere. A strong publication record and teaching experience during the PhD make the biggest difference.
